China China

I was wandering out of the office at the same time as one of my colleagues, and he mentioned he knew a place that did great wonton noodle soup. As we ambled over to Chinatown in the chilly lunchtime rush, he informed me that this was the greatest thing when you felt a bit of a cold coming on — and let's face it, who doesn't have one of those now winter is here?

Just on the corner of Gerrard Place and Gerrard Street (map), next to the popular New World, China China greeted us with an impressive array of meat and seafood hanging in the window. When we entered we were ushered upstairs to the first floor dining room which was fairly empty (2 other tables were filled), providing a nice break from the bustle of the office and the street.

We ordered spring rolls, wonton noodle soup, and a pot of tea. To our surprise, four sizeable spring rolls were presented — one each would have been plenty. That said, they were damned good; not too greasy, and filled with a good mix of pork, prawn and bean sprouts. The broth used in the soup was fantastic. It was clean, crisp, and smelt heavenly. The wontons had a great stuffing, and my only complaint is that the "tails" of them ended up a bit like really soggy overcooked pasta.

All in all, we left £15 to cover the food, drink, and a tip; and if we'd realised there'd be so many spring rolls, it would've been less. Final verdict? Thumbs up
